Before Surgery Instructions

Pre-Operative IV Sedation Instructions

Please review the following instructions carefully. Following these guidelines will help your procedure go smoothly and support your recovery. Failure to follow these instructions may result in your surgery being delayed or rescheduled.

Fasting

  • Do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours before your surgery.
  • No water, chewing gum, mints, candy, or food during this fasting period.
  • In the morning of your surgery, you may brush your teeth and rinse your mouth well. Make sure to spit everything out completely.

Medications

  • Please continue taking your usual, everyday prescription medications UNLESS we have specifically instructed you to stop or adjust them.
  • Certain medications may need to be held or modified before surgery (for example: some blood thinners, GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic®, insulin dosing, or ADHD medications). These instructions will be reviewed with you during your consultation.
  • If you are uncertain about any medication you take on a regular basis, please contact the office before surgery.

Pre-Operative Antibiotic

  • If prescribed, take your pre-operative antibiotic exactly as directed, typically 2 hours before surgery.
  • This prescription will be sent to your preferred pharmacy ahead of time.

Smoking, Vaping, and Marijuana

  • Avoid smoking, vaping, or using any marijuana products for at least 72 hours before your surgery.

Clothing and Preparation

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • A short-sleeve T-shirt is recommended for placement of the IV and blood pressure cuff.
  • Women should wear two-piece clothing, not a dress.
  • Wear comfortable, supportive shoes. Flip-flops are not recommended.
  • If you wear contact lenses, please use glasses instead on the day of surgery.
  • Avoid lipstick and dark nail polish as these can interfere with monitoring your oxygen levels and overall condition during the procedure.

Transportation & Supervision

  • You MUST bring a responsible adult, age 18 or older, to drive you home after your procedure.
  • The patient’s escort is REQUIRED to remain in the office during the procedure and recovery and should NOT leave the premises.
  • You will NOT be permitted to drive for 24 hours following surgery.
  • If the patient is a minor, a parent must remain in the office during the entire surgery.
  • Young children should be closely supervised for several hours after surgery, as sedation medication may remain in their system even if they appear fully awake.

Timing & Expectations

  • Most surgeries typically last about 1 hour. Our team will let you know if your surgery will take longer.
  • Recovery time is approximately 30–60 minutes.
  • Expect to be at the office for approximately two hours total.

  • If you have any concerns before your appointment, please do not hesitate to call the office at (847) 998-8959.
